European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
