Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry
The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.
He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
